I don't think that hate is the root of racism. (This post contains portions recollected from a previous essay I developed, which was digitally removed from my social media post. It is not as complete as the original)
Racism: The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another.
I feel that people have a hard time seeing that they are racist, because we often relate racism to hate and violence. A person can still be be racist and not be violent. A person can still be racist towards someone that they have a loving and nurturing relationship with.
I feel racism is rooted in ignorance. Ignorance does NOT mean that a person is stupid. It simply means that a person is ignoring information that is present. Racism is rooted in ignorance when triggered by an event it is and often expressed through hate, violence, anger, discrimination, smart remarks, unfunny jokes, rudeness and many other actions we are unfortunate to experience.
